Once again, Mason Mingus clawed his way to
another impressive top-10 finish in CRA Super
Series competition. The series rookie finished
sixth Sunday at M-40 Speedway in Jones, MI.
Mingus and his Kentucky/Tennessee 811 team
were fast in practice. In fact, they were fourth
on the speed charts in both sessions. But
qualifying was the team’s Achilles heel.
“We had a really good car in practice, but I
missed it in qualifying a little bit,” admitted the
16 year-old. “I had a great warm-up lap and
I overdrove it in both corners of the first lap and it washed up the track. It was a bad lap; we had a better second lap, but it wasn’t as good as we wanted.”
Mingus made the most of the 125-lap inaugural event at the 3/8’s of a mile M-40 Speedway. He started 15th, but when all was said and done, the teenager posted a sixth place finish.
“We had an outstanding racecar,” said Mingus. “We came through the field and were fifth with just two or three laps to go and then the 4-car got around us on the outside. I had used my tires up coming from 15th all the way to fifth.
“I’m happy with the progress we made in the race, but we need to work on qualifying. We are hurting ourselves. It would have been a lot easier just to start in the top three or four.”
Mingus now has four top-10 finishes in six starts this year on the CRA Super Series. He has only qualified in the top-10 once this year.
The next event on the docket for Mingus and his 811, “Call Before You Dig” team, will be a 200 lap race for the CRA SS on Sunday, July 24th at Plymouth Speedway in Indiana.
